Banana gourds are mini gourds, 5-7 inches in length and shaped similiar to a banana. They make wonderful ornaments, little birds, animals, fishing lure replicas, etc.

Bottle Gourds

Bottle gourds are best described as hour glass shaped. There are several different varieties of bottles and each is shaped somewhat different. Some have short necks on top, while others are flat on top. On some varieties the top and bottom bulbs are about the same size, while others have a smaller top bulb. They make wonderful birdhouses, figures (snowmen, santas, etc.) bowls, vases, musical instruments, forms for teneriffe, the list is endless.

Bushel gourds are basically slightly flattened round gourds. Some varieties can grow to be very large, while others are medium sized. Our bushel gourds have a variety of shell thicknesses and densities. They make perfect bowls and baskets. They also make nice bird feeders, lidded boxes, lamp bases/shades, anything round.

Cannonball Cross Gourds

Cannonball Cross gourds are round gourds with a short neck in the 4-6 inch diameter range. Many of them have flat bottoms. They generally have a thicker shell than cannonballs. They make excellent lidded boxes, oil lamps, hanging lamps, Christmas ornaments, etc.

Canteen gourds are so named because they resemble canteens. They are flattened round gourds. Canteen gourds can be crafted into purses, shallow bowls, bird feeders, lidded boxes, functional canteens, wall pockets, etc.

Cheese gourds are a small (5-7 inch diameter) gourds with ridges and sometimes warts. They look like small pumpkins. They generally have a thin, hard, dense shell. They are popular for pumpkins, flowers, etc.

Curly Dipper Gourds

Dipper gourds have necks or handles with a bulb at the end. The extra-long handled dippers that we offer for sale have 1'-5' long curly handles. Each is one of a kind. Extra-long handled dippers make good wall hangings, unique floral arrangements, etc. The necks are often used for tails on gourd animals.

Maranka Gourds

Maranka gourds also called dinosaur gourds are kind of similiar to dipper gourds, but they have an elongated body with ridges. They make good birds, dinosaurs, unique air plant holders, birdhouses, etc.

Martinhouse Gourds

Martin house gourds, as their name implies, have been the traditional choice of gourd varieties for crafting into homes for purple martins. They are shaped similiar to Hersey's kisses, having a neck with a flared base. They most always sit flat. Our martinhouse gourds have a fairly thick (1/4"-1/2"), hard, dense shell. They are a very versatile variety that can be crafted in many ways. They are a popular choice for carving, santas, bowls, teneriffe designs and of course birdhouses.

As such, they combine the characteristics of their parents to produce a new shape. They are so varied that its impossible to describe the many shapes.

Penguin gourds are shaped like penguins. They generally have a thin, but dense shell and a rounded bottom. They are great for making birds, teneriffe designs, vases, etc.

Snake gourds are long, tubular gourds that resemble snakes. They have a thin shell. They make good snakes, tall canvases, crosses, etc.

Speckled Swan Gourds

Speckled Swan also known as Goose Gourds often resemble these birds. They have a rounded body, a neck with a swollen area a few inches back from the end, then a beak or nose. If grown on a trellis they will have a straight neck. If grown on the ground most will have a curved neck. Ours are grown on the ground. Their skin color prior to drying is green with cream colored splotches, hence the speckled title. They are often crafted into the birds which they resemble. They can also be crafted into bird houses, bowls, etc.

Tall Gourds

We have a couple different shapes that we call tall gourds. One is what's pictured. They look kind of like small zucca gourds. The other shape is like a tall bodied martin gourd. They generally both have a flat bottom, slightly flared, kind of square base and either a short wide neck (pictured) or a taller more narrow neck. They are a fairly thick shelled (1/4'-3/8") gourd. They make good vases, tall canvases, etc.
